Location: CEMEX’s corporate headquarters resides in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico with additional international plants in California, Colorado, Buenos Aires, Dhaka, and Taipei. This reclamation project took place in Coahuila, Mexico. Overview: CEMEX created a plan to protect the environment and restore the ecosystem in Coahuila, Mexico. The plan successfully transformed the land into a flora and fauna protection reserve. The El Carmen reserve also serves as a protected ecosystem for many different plants and animals indigenous to the area. Location: CEMEX USA’s headquarters reside in Houston, Texas with multiple plants throughout the USA. The reclamation project took place in Ohio. Overview: The CEMEX USA plant in Ohio reclaimed 200 acres of land that was previously mined for limestone. The project involved restoration of a wetland, landscaping, species protection, and the demolition of an old building used for fill around the area. Rio Tinto’s headquarters reside in Melbourne, Australia, and the reclamation project took place in Central Tennessee. Overview: Rio Tinto and its subsidiary, Kennecott Energy Company, partnered with the Department of Environment and Conservation, and the Department of Agriculture to reduce water pollution around Sequatchie Valley Coal Mine. Rio Tinto and Kennecott used a improvement plan developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Overview: Rio Tinto Borax owns and operates the largest open pit mine, located in California. In an effort to improve the site and reduce pollution to the area around the mine, Rio Tinto implemented a reclamation project. The project recreated a wildlife habitat as well as preserved native plant species. The plan also minimized pollution in top water, and cut down on fuel and electricity use. Organization: The USDA Forrest Service in the White Mountain National Forest lead the reclamation process Location: The Eco Reclamation Site is near the town of Warren in Grafton County, New Hampshire. Overview: The project will address acid mine drainage that is affecting several miles of Ore Hill Brook. The acid mine drainage affects surface water quality, and aquatic habitat. The U.S. Forest Service will access the source and excavate the affected area. Additionally, they will lower pH levels and the high concentration of environmentally hazardous metals in the water. Additional Environmental Information: CERCLA , Forest Management Projects, USDA and Ecosystem management U.S. Department of AgricultureProject: The reclamation project will reduce hazardous materials released from the Silver Crescent Mine or Moon Creek. Location: The reclamation project is located near Kellogg, Idaho in Shoshone County. Organization: The Silver Crescent Mine project is sponsored by the U.S department of Agriculture, and the Forest Service in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Ridolfi Engineers, and Environmental Reclamation, Inc. Overview: The abandoned Silver Crescent Mine releases hazardous metals near residential areas and into Moon Creek. The project reduced the amount of lead, zinc, copper, mercury, and arsenic that flowed into the creek, which will help restore cutthroat trout habitat. The site also created a healthy environment for residents and activities on Forest Service land. Location: Earthwork is located in Washington D.C. The reclamation project resides 7 mile south of Rockdale, Texas in Milam County Overview: The goal of the project consisted of taking abandoned mine soil and spreading it out over 1,100 acres of land, filling several pits. The project also redesigned the land making it more susceptible to revegetation.
