Eco Reclamation Directory Page 2Phelps DodgeProject: The Pinal Creek Remediation Project focuses on reversing the effects of ground water degradation to the Pinal Creek’s aquifer. Company: The project started under the guidance of Phelps Dodge in conjunction with Arizona’s Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund program, which commissioned the project. Location: Phelps Dodge retains headquarters in Phoenix, AZ. The reclamation project took place in the Globe-Miami Mining District in Gila County, Arizona. Overview: The reclamation project reduced the amount of iron, copper, zinc, aluminum and manganese generated from mining operation that found its way into the Pinal Creek’s alluvial aquifer. The contamination will decrease due to a water treatment plant. The clean water will then release be released into Roosevelt Lake. Company: Phelps Dodge commissioned the reclamation of the Pecos Mine. Location: Phelps Dodge resides in Phoenix, Arizona. The reclamation project resides 15 mile north of the village of Pecos, New Mexico Overview: The project restored 12 acres of exposed waste rock piles as well as restored 10 acres of wetland around Willow Creek and the Pecos River. The project consists of storm water management and erosion control, material consolidation, Willow Creek restoration, revegetation and underdrain construction. Additional Environmental Information: Environmental Programs and Practices , Environmental Research , Environmental Projects , Mining Reclamation New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources DepartmentProject: Reclaim the Sugarite Canyon Coal Mine, making it safe for recreation Organization: The project succeeded under the guidance of New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department - Mining and Minerals Division, and the Abandoned Mine Land Bureau. Location: The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department - Mining and Minerals Division resides in Santa Fe, NM. The project took place in Raton, New Mexico Overview: Due to the mining, the canyon walls surrounding the area proved instable and were covered with coal mine waste. The area also possessed uncovered mine shafts that people could fall into. The companies involved in the reclamation process stabilized the walls with new vegetation, filled in mine shafts and worked to clean up the waste. Companies: Hecla Mining Company operated the project with help from Newmont Mining corporation. Location: Hecla Mining Company resides in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The project resides in Pershing County, Nevada. Overview: After operation of the Rosebud Mine halted, Hecla Mining Company started the reclamation process. The company created wildlife habitat as well as enhancing current habitat. Hecla also worked on recontouring and revegitation of the land surrounding the Rosebud mine. Additional Environmental Information: Hecla’s environmental Policy , Responsible Gold , Mining and Education , Idaho Mining And The Environment Coeur d’Alene Mining Co.Project: Reclaim and build new habitat around the Thunder Mountain Gold Mine. Company: http://www.coeur.com/"> The Coeur d’Alene Mining Co. commissioned the project and performed the reclamation in partnership with Wildlife Habitat Council . Location: Coeur d’ Alene Mining Company resides in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. The reclamation project took place in Central Idaho. Overview: A drainage system was built before mining to protect local streams and rivers, preserving salmon fisheries. The drainage system also protected the land around the river from erosion. Native species of plants were taken from the area at the time of mining and reserved in a greenhouse. After the mining concluded, the native plants were taken back to the mine site creating new habitat. Additional Environmental Information: Coeur d’ Alene Mining Co. and Environmental Policy , Idaho Abandoned Mine Land Program , Idaho Department of Land , Idaho State & Private Forestry Fact Sheets Partners for ReclamationProject: Reclaim area around a gob site left over from the Sanford coal mine, which affects farm land and the Wabash River Valley. Organization: The reclamation project proceeded under the guidance of Partners for Reclamation and Sycamore Trails Resource Conservation and Development Council. Location: Partners for Reclamation resided in Greencastle, Indiana. The reclamation project also resides in Greencastle, Indiana. Overview: Farm land suffered from acid runoff resulting from an abandoned gob pile. To correct the problem the partnership leveled the land and brought in lime to counteract the acid. Additionally, new soil replaced the tainted land, creating new land for vegetation.
